It is without any question that military garments have had a huge impact on fashion ever since WW2. It is also not far from the thruth to say that this garment might be one the most easily recognizable garment to proof that statement.

The duffle coat has a rich history with the name sometimes falsely being attributed to the Belgian town of Duffle where indeed a coarse wool fabric was made. A very similar coat with a different shape but with the distinctive wooden toggles was first made in the late 19th century in the UK. This garment however was strongly influenced by a Polish model which also used the wooden toggles.

To cut a long story short: the Royal Navy needed a hard wearing, warm coat for its overseas endeauvours. Please enter: the duffle coat. Mainly during the 1950s and 1960s the duffle coat saw wide civilian use and untill today it can be seen on the streets in various shapes and sizes.

Gloverall was able to secure a vast amount of deadstock duffle coats after WW2 and from then on they have been the go to brand for duffle coats. This example is made exactly after the original with the similar color, hood construction and toggle detail. The cut however is a bit more modern and this particular coat has a leather trim at the end of the sleeve.
